Adding and Subtracting Fractions
The way we add or subtract fractions is very similar to the way we add or subtract whole numbers. Sometimes we have to regroup from mixed numbers to improper fractions and sometimes we have to borrow from the whole number in a mixed number and add its value to the fraction.
Adding or subtracting fractions with like denominators: 3/4 + 5/4
Adding or subtracting fractions with unlike denominators: 2/3 + 3/4
Adding mixed numbers: 3 1/2 + 2 3/4
Subtracting mixed numbers: 4 3/4 - 2 1/3
Subtracting mixed numbers with regrouping: 5 1/3 - 2 5/8
