Improper fraction

A fraction where the numerator is larger than the denominator.  These fractions are larger than one whole.  They can be rewritten into an equivalent number called a mixed number.

If you have 5 quarters and you know that 4 quarters make one dollar, you can write the amount of money you have as 5/4 of a dollar.  Take a calculator, or do the division and divide 5 by 4.  The answer is 1.25.  Once again if we are talking money, that's $1.25.
