
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Arizona Biology Network program is designed to help under-represented minority students realize their goal of a career in the biomedical and behavioral sciences:
funded by the National Institutes of Health
provides a paid 10 week summer research experience in biomedical or behavioral research at the University of Arizona
students and faculty are chosen from all 20 Arizona community colleges and San Juan College in New Mexico
introduction to biology research, biology 187 is available on video as an overview of research before the program begins
housing provided for out-of-town students and faculty
For Students
receive research course credit in biology 295 while being paid to work in biomedical or behavioral research at the University of Arizona
students in the first year of the program work in teams with support from a community college team leader in a selected lab
eligible students in subsequent years may work individually in a University of Arizona laboratory
students will have the opportunity to become paid tutors for up to 15 hours a week for 30 weeks when they resume their course work in the fall and spring semesters after their summer research
students will have regular meetings with mentors at their community college and when they transfer, with mentors at their university
provides a bridge from the community college to the successful completion of a bachelor's degree in the biomedical and behavioral sciences
Eligible Students
minority students under-represented in the sciences, including African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans and natives of the United States Pacific islands
students must be enrolled in an Arizona community college or San Juan College in New Mexico during the spring semester of the year prior to the summer program
must have completed, or in-progress, a college-level biology, chemistry and math course
minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale is required in the math and sciences
students must plan to complete a bachelor's degree in the biological or behavioral sciences
For Faculty
opportunities in two areas: serve as paid team leaders to a team of four students for 10 weeks or do paid independent research for 10 weeks in a University of Arizona laboratory
Eligible Faculty
current faculty members of any of the 20 Arizona community colleges or San Juan College in New Mexico
