The KZ Gusen Memorial Committee Digital Archive’s
purpose is to honor the 40,000 victims of KZ Gusen
I, II, and III. We also wish to make what meager
amends are possible to the survivors and their
families by disseminating information about these
once forgotten camps in Upper
Austria. Recognizing how small this offering
is in relation to the loss and suffering, we yet hold open the
door of this virtual visitor’s center in hopes that
an exact account of the crimes might build common
ground for future generations, even where wounds
remain unhealed.
The KZ Gusen Memorial Committee Digital Archive Project
was conceived of and is supported by the KZ Gusen
Memorial Committee within Arbeitskreis fuer Heimat-,
Denkmal- und Geschichtspflege St. Georgen an der
Gusen, Austria, with the co-operation of the East
Campus of Pima Community College in Tucson, Arizona.
The 11th Armored Division, one of the liberating
divisions, has also funded our research.
For an overview of the history of the
Gusen camps, we direct readers to the KZ Gusen
Memorial Info-pages
www.gusen.org. At Pima Community College, Robert
Wise is our technical advisor and Jan-Ruth Mills
serves as researcher/editor. Pima Community College
student contributors are acknowledged where their
work appears within these files. We especially wish
to thank Dr. Larry McDonald at the National Archives
in College Park, Maryland, and Mr. Joseph Caver at
the US Air Force Historical Research Agency at
Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama, for their
assistance. Dr. Amy Schmidt at NARA directed us to
copies of the Dachau War Crimes Trial transcripts
and exhibits.
