This internet resource states how so “tens of thousands” of Spanish Republicans were killed, and it is amazing how Pedro Gomez survived and lived to tell his story in trial.  Silverstrim’s article shows how people that were “racial enemies, social undesirable and political enemies” were all under attack, and the Spanish exile were considered “political enemies” for the Nazis.  As Gomez says in his testimony, Silverstim states that Spaniards were put in groups in France in order to be sent to concentration camps.  For some reason Gomez did not know that they were targeted because they were considered political enemies, so it is amazing how people did not even know why they were in camps.  Gomez was even lucky to be able to enter SS barracks and listen to conversation and he still did not know why he and fellow Spaniards were sent to concentration camps. Since so many Spaniards were killed, this again demonstrates how fortunate Gomez was to be a mason and plumber.
